Good physical and mental health

Maintaining good physical health is important for good mental health and vice versa. Regular physical exercise can improve physical wellbeing and can also improve the symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress and help improve our mood. Good mental health can improve our physical health because we are more likely to be active.

Depression

Depression is a serious mood disorder. There are different types of depression, some of which are occur in specific circumstances (such as post-natal depression). Depression can happen at any age, but it often begins in adulthood. Depression can be treated, and the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it is.

Stress

Stress is a normal human reaction, it happens to everyone. Stress is a positive experience when it helps us adjust to new situations or challenges. However, stress becomes a problem if it goes on for a long time without any relief or relaxation. A person who has chronic stress can experience physical, mental and emotional symptoms. They may also start unhealthy behaviours such as drinking, smoking or taking drugs as they try to manage their stress.

Healthy ways to manage stress:

  • Take care of yourself: eat healthy food, exercise and get plenty of sleep.
  • Make time to relax.
  • Talk to somebody you trust.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol.
  • Know when to get more help from a counsellor, social worker or psychologist
